My two daughters were born 18 months apart, and for many years I treated them almost like twins. I dressed them alike, gave them similar hairstyles, signed them up for the same activities, and took them on the same playdates. Even when they were left to their own devices, they seemed to gravitate toward the same toys, the same TV shows, and the same interests.
Well, now that they have entered the “tween” stage, that has all changed. They are still close buddies and love many of the same things, but they definitely have a desire to differentiate themselves from one another, and it grows with each passing day.
Of course I get nostalgic thinking about the cute “matchy matchy” double-stroller days of the past, but I’ve loved seeing them develop their own personal tastes and sense of style, explore their favorite creative outlets, and define themselves as unique individuals, whether it’s choosing a color for their toenails…
…deciding what they like to wear…
…or figuring out which style of dance they enjoy the most.
At this age, they embrace any opportunity to make their own decisions and express themselves. (My oldest daughter spent a solid week debating what color she was going to choose for the rubber bands on her braces!)
When I told the girls they would get to choose from six flavors of DOLE’s new Fruitocracy fruit snack, they were all about it!
Fruitocracy is made from all-natural, real fruit with no refined sugars or high fructose corn syrup, and it comes in Apple, Apple Banana, Apple Mixed Berry, Apple Pineapple, Apple Strawberry, and Apple Cherry. It’s also non-GMO and comes in BPA-free packaging, which makes me feel good — especially because the girls consumed about 10 packages each in the span of just a few days!
They spent the whole week trying each of the flavors, and they loved being able to choose which one that they wanted to pack in their lunch, eat as an after-school snack, or toss into their dance bags. They even discussed which flavors would pair best with whatever else they were eating (What can I say…we’re a family of foodies!)
If you have a tween in your life who craves freedom of expression, you should definitely introduce him or her to Fruitocracy. And if you visit the Fruitocracy website, you can print a $1.oo off coupon to try it out.
