Welcome to Good + Simple!
I’m so glad you’re here.
About the blog:
The word “simple” is thrown around a lot these days, and it means different things to different people. To me, living a simpler life doesn’t mean selling all of our possessions and moving into a tiny house (not that there’s anything wrong with that). It just means taking things down a notch. It’s prioritizing presence over busyness, people over things, and authenticity over impressiveness. It’s good, real food that isn’t overly fussy. It’s figuring out what and who you love, and making adequate room for both in your life. It’s letting “The Joneses” doing their thing without judging or trying to keep up.
What you’ll find here:
This blog covers a lot of topics relating to living well and living simply, but these are three of the subjects you’ll find me writing about most frequently.
Food is a passion of mine, and I dedicate a lot of my posts to recipes and sharing solutions for feeding a family. I also wrote out some of my thoughts on food so you can understand my approach to cooking and nutrition.
I look at simplifying in two ways: external and internal. The external side to simplifying focuses on finding practical solutions that make our lives easier and our days run more smoothly. In addition to the food solutions I mentioned above, this includes ideas for decluttering, organizing, and simplifying our daily routines.
Even if you manage to completely streamline your home and your schedule to free up time, you might find that your brain is constantly spinning and you’re not finding joy or contentment in your life. That means it’s time to focus on inner simplicity. It’s just as important to live with a sense of purpose and peace as it is to have an organized linen closet.
I’m a wife of 16 years and a mom of two girls (8 and 10 years old), currently living in Houston, TX. I grew up in central Pennsylvania, but my husband and I spent six years in the Los Angeles area, six years in Phoenix, and two years living in a suburb of Philadelphia.
When we finally got settled in Houston — our second major move in less than two years — I was expecting to finally relax a little. For the first time since my youngest was born and I became a full-time SAHM, my girls were both in school all day and I could count on a little time to myself. I couldn’t wait to get back to writing and working and learning and doing creative and inspiring things with my newly free hours.
Instead, I felt stuck. Even without boxes to unpack or kids to chase after, my “to do” list seemed longer than ever before. I saw how easily my days could fill up with kids’ activities and school involvement and making the house look nicer and making myself look better and making our family dinners more exotic, and basically just trying to improve and perfect everything around me.
That’s when I finally said “STOP!”
I realized that my feelings of being overwhelmed and exhausted and uninspired weren’t going to change from my circumstances alone…I needed to change my approach.
I knew that if I was ever going to truly enjoy my life and find the fulfilling, stress-free existence I was craving, I’d need to give up trying to make things “perfect” and “spectacular” and focus on “good” and “simple” instead.
My #1 goal with this blog is to share things that inspire, that encourage, and that make life better without making it more complicated. I love hearing from readers, so feel free to contact me at any time to let me know your thoughts, to share any tips of your own, or to let me know what parts of your life you’d like to make simpler and better.
